Yet another Traffic Article

A while back, I wrote about how the Philippines was considered one of the worst places to drive because of heavy traffic and the chaotic nature here. Well, apparently the Philippines has the 3rd fastest auto sales growth in South East Asia. In terms of motorcycles though, the Philippines has the fastest growth.

Off the bat, what this tells me: traffic, and lots more of it. In my article on traffic here, I think I said that the Philippines was the 2nd or 3rd worst place to drive, well, with the growth in sales, we might reach the top of that list. Aside from more cars and motorcycles on the road though, there’s also the problem of infrastructure. Right now, I don’t think a majority of the roads in the Philippines are able to deal with the congestion. Wider roads, alternate forms of transportation and simply not allowing people to park anywhere they want would help a lot. I’m not sure if it’s the same anywhere else, but another major cause of traffic here in Davao are the traffic lights. A lot of them simply stop working for some reason and drivers then play the “Every car for themselves” game, which means a lot of wasted time.

Another thing to consider is improving the standard for getting a license. When my friend got to get his license, he said there was a test and everyone was blatantly cheating. If they made it so cheating would actually be punished and people applying would have to take a class on driving or something, I think a decent number of drivers would actually know the laws and stuff. Of course, they might know the laws but they may not follow them because no one else is, so it’s also up to the LTO and TMC to actually enforce laws and give out punishments if necessary.

I seem to be seeing a lot more diversity here. Brands that you rarely saw before are starting to pop up more frequently. Mazda seems to be getting a lot of love here, I see a lot of them around now. I also see a few Subarus here and there, even an STI in that signature Subaru blue. There’s also a green Mustang roaming the streets of Davao, certainly gonna draw a few looks since you don’t see those everyday here. It’s nice to see cars that aren’t Honda or Toyota once in a while, kinda breaks the monotony, lol.

On the other hand, production is also up, so that could mean more jobs and such, which is good. It would be interesting to see if the growth is gonna continue and if so, then how much. I would also keep an eye out for what the government is planning to do about the continuing problem of congestion. I’m sure eventually they have to do something, especially if we do end up being the worst country in the world for drivers…
