Stiffer penalties poised vs. abusive PUV drivers —LTFRB

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is poised to impose stiffer sanctions on errant drivers of public utility vehicles such as taxis, buses, jeeps and even transport network vehicles or TNVS.

According to Saleema Refran's report on "24 Oras," LTFRB officials already announced the move before a group of taxi operators and drivers.

"Kung gagawin natin 'yan, seseryosohin na ngayon ng mga drivers ang kanilang mga trabaho kasi nakasalalay ang kanilang lisensiya. Sa ngayon kasi, wala," LTFRB member Aileen Lizada said.

"It has been going on for, ganyan, for how many years," she added.
The move came after reports of abusive drivers went viral in the social media.

One such story was that of a taxi driver who refused driving a senior citizen and her daughter amid the rains in Cebu City.

The video of the driver refusing his passengers has gone viral.

Under a memorandum circular to be released, errant PUV drivers will have their licenses suspended for three months with their first offense. The penalty will climb to six months on the second violation.
The PUV driver is set to have his license cancelled on the third offense.
The Philippine National Taxi Operators Association (PNTOA) hoped for the sanctions not to be entirely based on social media posts.
"The drivers will realize na meron silang responsibility, na pag may ginawang violation, may kaukulang parusa o may kaukulang penalty," PNTOA President Atty. Bong Suntay said on the report.

"Yung mga comment sa solcial media, while it helps, there should also be a verified complaint," he added.
